Introduction to Tahitian Pearls

The round pearl is the most sought after of all the Tahitian cultured pearls. But as they are the most delicate to obtain, they are also the most expensive. They are present in 15% of harvests.

However, other shapes appear in cultures such as semi-round, semi-baroque pearls, or even baroque pearls, that is to say without an axis of symmetry unlike other shapes.

How is a Tahitian pearl cultivated?

  • First of all, a piece of mantle from a sacrificed Pinctada margaritifera oyster is selected for its color and especially its quality
  • Next comes a technical procedure called grafting, in order to start the production of a cultured pearl from a piece of inserted nucleus
  • The pearl oysters are then immersed in the bottom of the lagoon for at least 18 months
  • In order to obtain a minimum layer of nacre of 8mm according to Polynesian regulations, it is necessary to be able to respect this minimum time
  • From there, we can start harvesting pearls and the round ones are the most sought after

Defining the value of a Tahitian pearl

It is important to know that losses are relatively considerable and that a good part of the harvests are considered as waste: the pearls harvested are not exploitable, because they are too damaged, or their luster has no commercial value.

If you want to know the characteristics that allow you to recognize the value of a Tahitian cultured pearl, you can see the sheet that will allow you to visualize the criteria which define the surface quality of a pearl.

How to choose a Tahitian pearl

A Tahitian cultured pearl is unique and it is why it's very difficult to obtain pairs that look alike. That said, there are several characteristics that define a Tahitian cultured pearl. The round pearl, for example, is the most sought after because it is represented as being the most perfect, but depending on each person's taste, drop-shaped pearls are also very popular or even the keshis because of their uniqueness and small size.

Criteria for selecting a Tahitian pearl

  • Its color tone (from dark to very light or even golden, in shades of green, blue or purple)
  • Its shape (round, semi-round, semi-baroque, baroque, or keshis which have unique shapes)
  • Its size (mainly ranging from 8mm to 14mm but you can find round pearls up to 18mm!)
  • Its luster (sometimes a round pearl can lose commercial value just because of a dull luster)

Caring for your Tahitian pearl

Your pearl is produced by a living organism, the black-lipped pearl oyster. It is made of aragonite, commonly called mother-of-pearl. This is the result of a complex structure combining a mineral part, mainly calcium carbonate, and an organic part mainly protein. It is therefore essential to be able to provide some care that respects the proper conservation of your pearl. Perfume, alcohol, chemicals or acids, hairspray, soapy water and chlorine are to be avoided. Also, avoid mixing your pearl with other jewelry to avoid scratching it. Wipe your pearl with a damp chamois leather to maintain it or wear it regularly, because in contact with your skin it will rehydrate and thus retain all its beauty.
